Hello there, I'm Mark.

And I am ready to join your team.
see what I can do
My Work
The sports fantasy start-up where I currently work.
Skills I use in this position:
Python • Tornado • MongoDB • Material Design • Bootstrap • JQuery • Agile • Trello
*I cannot share any site information at this time.*
The Odin Project
The Odin Project is where I learned how to be a developer. It is an open-source online project-based curriculum for learning full-stack development. They offer foundational courses, as well as tracks for Ruby on Rails and JavaScript and NodeJS. I chose Rails because it would diversify my skills, and I grew to enjoy the language. I have included three projects, one from each section of the curriculum.
The capstone project for my Rails course, a simplified 'Facebook' based on my housing group from college.
Built with:
Ruby on Rails • PostgreSQL • Devise • Heroku • Bootstrap
The final project for the Ruby portion of the curriculum, a terminal-based chess game.
Skills used:
Ruby • OOP • Algorithmic Reasoning
My favorite project from the foundations section of the curriculum, a simple RPS game played in the browser.
Skills used:
HTML • custom CSS • JS
Flight Booker • Hangman • Etch-a-Sketch • Blog • Event Planner • Flickr API • Calculator • Micro-Reddit
Growing as a developer never stops, so I am currently taking a course on React to strengthen my front-end skills.
It's been a winding road to arrive at development. In the past four years I was a minister, personal shopper, farm hand, and an at-home caretaker for the elderly. Why would someone shift jobs so frequently? Because deep down I am motivated by helping others maximize their potential, and that can be done in any line of work.
A few years ago, however, my wife decided to start her own art business, and it was hard. I wanted so deeply to help her, but I quickly learned I did not have the skills to contribute. I soon realized having a desire to help people reach their potential is not enough. I needed skills. Before long I understood coding was a skill which matched my natural talents with the power to make a difference.
From there, a friend of mine introduced me to The Odin Project, and I dove right in. The more I learned, the more I discovered how much can be achieved in development. Whether it's a small virtual safe for cherished recipes, or a new sports fantasy app with the goal of changing the industry, there is potential, and room, for everyone's dreams to be realized, or at least nudged a little closer to reality. It has been a roller coaster of humbling, exciting, frustrating, and rewarding experiences. But it has led me here, maximizing my potential to help others maximize theirs.
